Metabarcoding sequences as a new lineages

What do we do with metabarcoding sequences? It is not the complete ITS so it could not itself be representative of a new lineage. And if we have a metabarcoding sequence that does not match an already described lineage, but matches a sequence available in GenBank, can we use the other sequence as a representative of the new lineage?

Thanks!

I would be happy to add some dataset of well-defined and abundant OTUs recovered only by environmental sequencing. But I would select only those occurring multiple times in fairly large abundances to avoid various chimeras and pseudogenes. But we should probably not follow the OTU naming system for Sanger-sequenced algae.
